The medicinal properties of sage were recognized by the ancient Greeks, as noted by the ancient Roman scholars Galen and Pliny the Elder. A water infusion of sage leaves is known as “Greek tea.”
The leaves of this plant are used as a medicinal raw material. They have antiseptic properties and reduce inflammation. Infusions of sage leaves promote the enhancement of the body’s secretory function, as they contain bitterness and essential oils. Sage also influences the increase of secretory activity of the digestive system, having a mild spasmolytic effect. Another property is the inhibition of perspiration.
Sage is known as a remedy for colds: it relieves headaches and discomfort. Sage, often combined with milk, is used for coughs accompanying bronchitis, pneumonia, and more.
