Lactation is a natural physiological process consisting of three phases: secretion of breast milk, its accumulation in mammary glands and ducts, and excretion. Maternal milk is essential for the infant from the early days of life, serving as both food and hydration. Thanks to this natural, nutritious, and vitamin-rich product, the child’s immune system is strengthened, and weight is gained. However, sometimes the baby may not receive a sufficient amount due to a decrease in lactation. What are the reasons for this?
It could be a lactation crisis—a period when mammary glands “adjust” to a more active mode to synthesize a larger volume of milk. This is associated with the rapid growth of the baby, requiring more food. Milk deficiency for feeding can be caused by other factors as well: lactation function may sometimes fail due to stress, lack of sleep, etc. In such situations, breastfeeding mothers may need additional efforts to normalize milk production, and among the measures to stimulate lactation is the use of phytopreparations.
Most commonly recommended as lactogenic agents for women are cumin and fennel. The essential oils present in these plants contain specific substances that activate the functioning of mammary glands.
