Gout is a chronic condition associated with impaired uric acid metabolism, leading to an increase in uric acid levels in the blood and the deposition of urate crystals (sodium salt of uric acid) in tissues. Clinically, this manifests as recurrent acute arthritis and the formation of gouty nodules (tophi). Gout has been known since ancient times, but the first detailed description was provided in 1685 by T. Sydenham in the book “A Treatise on Gout.” Later, it was noted that people with gout have elevated uric acid levels in the blood (hyperuricemia). In the 19th century, scientists discovered urate crystals in the joint fluid during an acute gout attack. However, it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that experts established the role of sodium urate crystals in the development of acute gout attacks.
